The band’s name evokes the magic of Balkan folklore. Baba Yaga is a well-known figure in Slavic mythology, often portrayed as a witch—dangerous and sinister—but at times also as a benefactor, endowed with magical and powerful qualities, though always somewhat fearsome.
This name, which reflects the dual nature of things, was chosen by the Vienna-based group of the same name. In their performances, they blend Balkan and Eastern melodies with klezmer—the traditional musical style of Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe—and Gypsy jazz. Their original compositions often lead into free improvisation. A concentrated burst of creativity that resulted in their debut album Grenzenlos (“without borders,” therefore limitless and free) released in 2024, which was equally acclaimed by audiences and critics.
The band has performed in prestigious venues such as Vienna’s Porgy & Bess, the ORF Radiokulturhaus, and the KlezMORE Festival, bringing to the stage a music that breaks conventions and carries an irresistible invitation to dance.
