Gilles Apap

Gilles Apap, born in 1963 in Algeria to a French family, grew up in Nice where he studied violin with André Robert. He is renowned not only for his virtuosic interpretations of the classical repertoire, but also for his explorations into jazz and folk music.

Described by the great virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin as “the true violinist for the twenty-first century,” Apap combines rigorous musicianship with a strong commitment to accessibility. With apparent ease, he moves from the classical repertoire—of which he is a master—to very different styles, ranging from American country and Gypsy music to Irish and Indian traditions. He has summed up his musical philosophy in these words: “All music is created equal.
