Danilo Rea, Enzo Pietropaoli, Fabrizio Sferra: Doctor 3

2000X1460Doctor-3

A jazz supergroup reimagines the songs of Luigi Tenco beneath the Monti Pallidi

Special Project: Lontano lontano

The songs of Luigi Tenco, suspended between melancholy, love, and quiet courage, have left an indelible mark on the landscape of Italian music. They are songs that continue to speak to us, giving voice to our anxieties, untouched by changing fashions, shifts in public taste, or the technological evolution that has taken place since that tragic January 27, 1967, when Tenco, after an evening at the Sanremo Festival, took his own life.

Those songs will return, for an unforgettable evening, in the park of Villa Welsperg, a splendid noble residence built in 1853, now home to the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Nature Park. Reinterpreting them with love, delicacy, and intensity will be Doctor 3, a trio formed in 1997 on the occasion of recording their first album, The Tales of Doctor 3, which was named Best Italian Album of the Year by Musica Jazz magazine (an award the group has received two more times).

An ensemble with a cross-genre approach—perfectly in line with the spirit of I Suoni delle Dolomiti – that blends true jazz with pop sensibilities and singer-songwriter influences.

Danilo Rea, born in Vicenza and Roman by adoption, has made the piano his voice and improvisation his natural language. A graduate of the Santa Cecilia Conservatory, he has shared the stage with jazz giants such as Chet Baker, John Scofield, and Brad Mehldau, while also engaging in a parallel dialogue with great Italian songwriters—from Mina to Gino Paoli, from Fiorella Mannoia to Claudio Baglioni—and collaborating with film and theatre, from Carlo Verdone to Valerio Mastandrea.

On double bass is Enzo Pietropaoli, a Roman musician who, together with Rea and Roberto Gatto, has been part of the Trio di Roma since 1975. Over a career spanning more than forty years, Pietropaoli has also performed with some of the greatest names in jazz, from Lester Bowie to Lee Konitz, from Enrico Rava to Pat Metheny.

On drums, finally, is Fabrizio Sferra, another internationally acclaimed musician, active on the jazz scene since childhood. In the early 1980s, he founded the Space Jazz Trio with Pietropaoli and Enrico Pieranunzi, and later performed alongside, among others, Chet Baker, Kenny Wheeler, and Paul Bley.

A true supergroup, then, for an unforgettable evening dedicated to the great tradition of Italian song.
