Regional music takes on new life as the traditional harmonies of French and Occitan mountain choirs merge with the industrial rhythms of a mechanical shop

Malga Canvere is situated between the Lagorai mountains, the most unspoilt in Trentino, and the Dolomites of the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Park, the largest group of the Dolomites with a surface area of 240 km², in a landscape of wooden alpine farmsteads, flower-filled meadows and coniferous woods.

It is an extremely evocative place, ideal for walks, for contemplation, but also for social gatherings. It is the perfect setting for the performance of Les Mécanos, a group of ten singers bound by a strong friendship who, since 2018, have been exploring the French and Occitan song heritage, cultivating a common desire: to rediscover the regional repertoires that are an integral part of each of their musical universes.

But before you think of a “traditional” vocal concert of mountain choirs, let’s explain the reason for the group’s name: Les Mécanos accompany their polyphony with percussion instruments of various kinds, from bass drums and floor toms to objects and tools that are usually found not in theatres and music arenas, but in mechanical workshops, such as wrenches, exhaust pipes or wheel rims.

This unusual combination produces intense and evocative music, ranging from the repertoire of work and struggle songs to rhythms suitable for dancing, celebrations and festive moments of communities coming together to strengthen their friendship, their desire to be together, their bonds.
